Q4 2025 Business Outlook: Industries That Drove Growth & Opportunity

Marketing Insights | Industry Analysis | October–December 2025

As 2025 came to a close, the U.S. economy revealed a clear divide between industries experiencing growth and those facing slower demand, workforce challenges, and changing market conditions.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, real GDP increased at an annualized rate of just 0.5% during the fourth quarter, following 4.4% growth in the third quarter. Despite the slowdown, several industries continued to make meaningful contributions to economic activity.

Which Industries Performed Well?

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale trade was the largest positive industry contributor to fourth-quarter GDP growth. Its performance reinforced the importance of distribution networks, business-to-business commerce, and the infrastructure connecting suppliers with customers.

Information & Technology

The information sector remained a significant contributor to economic growth. Continued investment in digital infrastructure, information services, and technology created opportunities for businesses supporting digital transformation and operational efficiency.

Healthcare & Social Assistance

Healthcare and social assistance continued to demonstrate resilience. Healthcare employment increased by an average of approximately 34,000 jobs per month throughout 2025, reflecting sustained demand for essential services.

Retail Trade

Retail trade contributed positively to fourth-quarter GDP, although employment conditions told a more complicated story. Retail payrolls declined in December, illustrating why sales activity and workforce growth should be evaluated separately.

What Did This Mean for Business Owners?

The fourth quarter reinforced an important distinction: industry growth does not automatically translate into growth for every business operating within that industry.

Businesses still needed to understand customer demand, evaluate their competitive positioning, manage operating costs, and strengthen the systems supporting their products and services.

For smaller organizations, these fundamentals were especially important as economic growth slowed.

Looking Ahead

The strongest lesson from Q4 2025 was not simply which industries performed well. It was the importance of understanding where market opportunities existed and whether businesses had the infrastructure to pursue them.

As organizations entered 2026, informed decision-making, operational readiness, and clear market positioning remained essential to sustainable business growth.
